- Ramadan Lectures 1446 AH – The Most Beautiful Names of Allah
In the Name of Allah, The Most Gracious, Most Merciful
Dear brothers, today we explore another of Allah’s Beautiful Names, and the Name for today is Al Haleem.
Al-Haleem is the one who prefers to forgive rather than hasten punishment.
Allah says in describing our Master Ibrahim:
﴾ Verily Ibrahim (Abraham) was Al-Awwah (has fifteen different meanings but the correct one seems to be that he used to invoke Allah with humility, glorify Him and remember Him much), and was forbearing. (Tafsir Al-Qurtubi). ﴿
Al-Haleem is the One Who does not hasten punishment or retaliation. He does not deprive people of His graces and favors because of their sins. Instead, He provides for the sinner with the same provision as the obedient, even though there is a great difference between the two.
Dear brothers, all of you know that there are certain Beautiful Names of Allah that cannot be used to describe man, such as the Name Al-Khaalik (The Creator). Have you known a creator other than Allah?
However, The Name Al Aleem (The All-Knowing), Al Hakeem (The Wise) and Al Haleem (The All-Forbearing) are attributes that can be used to describe a man. You can describe a man as Haleem.
One of the subtle meanings of Al Haleem is that Allah Almighty postpones punishment.
The question here is: Why does He postpone punishment?
This postponement is not intended to punish man severely, but rather to give him a chance to turn back to Allah, repent, seek forgiveness, and show remorse.
